FHBP - Friends of OC Zoo


friends of oc zoo The Orange County Zoo in Irvine Park is home to animals native to the southwest. Residents include coyotes, bobcats, mountain lions, black bears, raccoons, barn owls, vultures and an American Bald Eagle. The Zoo provides educational classes and tours for toddlers and school children and is visited by some 100,000 people annually. Still, some 80% of Orange County residents are not aware that it exists. The Zoo is owned and operated by the County, but relies on donations from the community for animal enrichment projects and treats, exhibit refurbishment, zoo enhancements and after hours programs. Friends of OC Zoo (FOCZ) was created to serve as a fundraising arm of the facility. It is a 501(c)(3) non profit (operating under the umbrella of FHBP) and works directly with the zoo manager to encourage donations for specific projects to benefit the animals and/or boost attendance. FOCZ has to date secured a washing machine, funded an initial study/proposal for new signage and raised money via the “animal fun fund” to purchase enrichment toys for zoo animals. The group has done outreach at the OC Fair, distributed two-for-one coupons and published a newsletter for distribution to zoo visitors. FOCZ is currently working with OC Parks management to formalize its participation in zoo activities. FOCZ is actively seeking volunteers who are interested in fundraising, after hours programs, and tabling during zoo hours. Donations are also greatly appreciated and go directly to animal welfare, exhibit improvements and facility upgrades.
