orange coast river park (OCRP)

OCRP“Success Story at River Park” was the heading for a news article in 1998 when the Friends of Harbors, Beaches and Parks proposed a major, 1,000+ acre nature park at the lower Santa Ana River-edge which brought a flood of public praise. Its advantages are tremendous: a huge, people-friendly park with connecting trails, a show-case for an “ecological staircase” of unique coastal habitats. Additional themes for the park are a “seamless passageway” and an “oasis of tranquility” within a high density urban area that would benefit wildlife and humans alike.

To fund $50,000 worth of initial planning, the City Councils’ of Costa Mesa, Huntington Beach and Newport Beach voted to donate $5,000 each. Supervisors Tom Wilson and Jim Silva expedited a request for $10,000 from the County of Orange. The California Coastal Conservancy contributed $15,000 with Friends of Harbors, Beaches and Parks (FHBP) picking up the overrun of $10,000. The OCRP Concept Plan was finished in 2002 and since that time the OCRP Partnership has included liaison representatives from each of the cities and the county and meets monthly to work toward our mission:

To create a thousand acre nature park at the mouth of the Santa Ana River with habitats and trails providing an oasis of tranquility, a seamless passageway to the shore, and an ecological staircase of restored coastal habitats.
