walk score study

During August and September 2011, the Green Vision Team researched the walkability of every city in Orange County. Walk Scores demonstrate how easy it is to live a car-lite lifestyle.

Walk Scores utilize 13 different categories and award points for each amenity between ¼ to 1 mile. Amenities within ¼ mile receive maximum points, while no points are awarded for amenities further than one mile. The categories include: grocery store, coffee shop, movie theatre, park, bookstore, drug store, clothing and music store, restaurant, bar, school, library, fitness, and hardware store. Generally anything over a score of 70 is considered good.

We calculated the Walk Score using two different methods. The first included the city hall Walk Score. With this analysis the top three cities with the highest city hall Walk Scores included: Newport Beach (100), Laguna Beach (98), and Seal Beach (95).

The second analysis provided the city's average Walk Score. With this analysis our three top cities with the highest city average Walk Scores included: Costa Mesa (76), Stanton (74), and Cypress (70).

Below are the results of the Walk Score Study:
