The OC Grand Jury reports that the three remaining landfills (Brea, Irvine, and San Juan Capistrano) should remain open as long as possible. However, contracts to import non-OC trash should cease so that the landfills operate longer. Those “out of area trash” contracts were negotiated to help pay off the Orange County bankruptcy, which concluded with the final payments June 30, 2017. All the landfills, when closed, are slated to become regional parks.
